Queensland’s current abortion laws provide for safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care. They have the support of medical and legal experts; and were recommended by the independent Queensland Law Reform Commission after months of consultations.

Issues related to abortion are generally treated as issues of personal ‘conscience’ vote. The 2018 law that removed abortion from the criminal code in Queensland passed by just 4 votes.

This law is expected to be challenged in the next parliament, make sure the person asking for your vote aligns with your values on reproductive freedom.

Fair Agenda asked candidates in your electorate whether they’d vote to protect Queensland’s current abortion laws. Here’s what they said:

First name Last name Party (if applicable) Response to survey Q: will you vote to protect Queensland's current abortion laws? Were they in parliament during 2018 vote? Did they vote to pass the Termination of Pregnancy Act in 2018?
Adrian Burke ALP Yes – This candidate has personally committed they will vote to protect the Termination of Pregnancy Act; which provides for support safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care. No
Deborah Moseley GRN Yes – This candidate’s party has a commitment to protect the Termination of  Pregnancy Act; which provides for support safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care. No
Shaun Sandow IND (LCQ) No
Brent Mickelberg MP LNP Yes No
Ryan Beall ONP Not clear - No personal response has been received from this One Nation candidate.  One Nation’s national website includes a range of policy statements that are counter to maintaining Queensland’s laws for safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care. One Nation Queensland has not responded to inquiry about whether they would bind MPs to a party position or provide personal conscience votes. No
